Mesdemoiselles Madeleines

Mesdemoiselles Madeleines Paris Rue des MartyrsMesdemoiselles Madeleines Paris Rue des Martyrs

A perfect little spot I discovered this weekend was the newly opened Mesdemoiselles Madeleines in my favourite parisian street, the Rue des Martyrs. Keeping to the trend of the ‘mono produits’ patisseries which specialise in only one particular product, Mesdemoiselles Madeleines is the latest concept to follow in the steps of  the macarons, éclairs and choux as well as the renowned tartes tropéziennes.

The boutique opened earlier this year and has already received a great amount of press exposure as journalists and bloggers alike have taken to the tasty flavoured madeleines. Forgot the original all-butter madeleine as you may know it, image a perfect blend of fresh buttery cake with delicate aromas of lemon and vanilla, or for the more gourmands you can even find madeleines with a filling of coffee, raspberry, chocolate and many other delightful flavours!

Prices start at around 0.70 for a mini madeleine, 2.50 for a larger flavoured madeleine and around 4.50 for the filled madeleines… a small price to pay for the perfect afternoon treat in Paris (and well deserved after having climbed the steep Rue des Martyrs)!

Christmas at the Hummingbird Bakery in London

Humming bird bakery London Humming bird bakery London 3Humming bird bakery London 7This week in London was incredible! I know it’s only just November but the festive atmosphere in the city was so much fun and despite having felt slightly repulsed upon first hearing Jingle Bells playing in M&S so early on, I have to say I actually kind of miss it now I’m back in Paris.

I found myself immediately drawn to all things Christmas including pretty beauty gift sets in Selfridges, ridiculous reindeer jumpers at Old Spitalfield Market and mulled wine at Somerset House but no festive treat was quite so pleasing as the adorable cupcakes from my favourite Hummingbird Bakery on Portobello Road!

To start off the holiday season in style, the super popular American-style Hummingbird Bakery has created a selection of special edition cupcakes in three festive flavours, Candy Cane, Gingerbread and Christmas Spice… I’m still dreaming of the sweet, wintery taste, when are they going to open up in Paris?

You can find the delicious sweet treats in each of the 5 London branches and you can even order your own box of mini cupcakes or delicious Christmas cakes online now!

Visit the Hummingbird Bakery at Spitalfields, Soho, Richmond, South Kensington and Notting Hill or online.

Lunch at Le Fumoir

Le FumoirLunch at Le Fumoir has been on my to-do list ever since I arrived in Paris. Two years ago. With a reputation whispered amongst those in the know, the hipster-style, vintage-themed restaurant has become the stylish place to hang out in Paris for light snacks, work socials and Sunday brunch.

Despite it’s location right opposite the Musée du Louvre near the Rue de Rivoli, Le Fumoir has managed to avoid the tourist tag and is a definite favourite amongst the Parisian locals!

Fun, jazzy and as-laid-back-as-Paris-gets, Le Fumoir has the perfect balance of being cool and elegant without the ridiculous prices and pretentious ambiance that usually goes hand in hand with this kind of establishment. Discussing a client meeting with a colleague, it was easy to chat amongst the light music and animated chatter in the background and we both opted for sandwiches from the light snacks menu. Obviously with fresh lobster sandwich on the menu it was impossible to see anything else but I was still tempted by my colleague’s tartine of goat’s cheese, aubergines and sun-dried tomatoes! Definitely a place to bring the boyfriend so you can share dishes.

Autumn Pumpkin Pie Recipe

Easy pumpkin pie recipeNothing quite says autumn like homemade pumpkin pie and, as much as I’m sorry to see the end of summer and the long, carefree days, this is one of my absolute favourite seasons of the year! It’s not always easy celebrating Halloween in France since it’s never been much of a tradition here but I always make sure I have some spooky decorations around the house and this year I found some great window stickers and jack-o-lanterns from Lidl as well as some cute little fall vegetables from the farmer’s market. Despite being with a very French man, my festive obsession seems to have rubbed off on him and we even have an annual pumpkin carving tradition which inspired me to make a delicious pumpkin pie! It’s simple to make and so delicious so if you’re in the mood for a little autumn treat, follow this easy recipe for the perfect fall dessert!

Ingredients:

750g fresh pumpkin (peeled and cut into large chunks)
1 roll of fresh pastry
140g of sugar
1/2 tsp of grated nutmeg
1/2 tsp of cinammon (and a little extra for decorating)
2 large eggs
25g melted butter
175ml of milk
1 tsp of icing sugar

Method:

First, peel the pumpkin, remove seeds and cut up into large chunks. Place the chunks into a large saucepan, cover with water and bring to the boil before covering with a lid and leaving to simmer for 15 minutes.

Whilst the pumpkin is being cooked, heat the over to 180C, place the pastry in a loose-bottomed tarte tin covered with non-stick paper and place in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes, until the crust is slightly golden.

Tip: if you prick the pastry with a fork before heating, this will prevent the base from rising too much.

Remove the pastry and allow to cool. Meanwhile, drain the pumpkin pieces and mash them until you have a smooth puree. In a seperate bowl, mix the sugar, nutmeg and cinammon and then stir in the milk and beaten eggs. Add the pumpkin puree and stir until you have an even mixture.

Pour the mixture into the pastry shell and place in the centre of the oven for 10 mintues. Reduce oven heat to 180C and leave for another 40 minutes until the filling has set.

Remove the pie, leave to cool, and then dust with icing sugar and a pinch more cinammon before serving. For a little extra indulgence, add a scoop of vanilla ice-cream or freshly whipped cream!
