An Interview with Perfumer Bertrand Duchafour

L'Artisan Parfumeur

Last week I told you about an exciting project I worked on with Reem of Five Five Fabulous and Olivia of What Olivia Did for today’s brand new sale of L’Artisan Parfumeur fragrances on vente-privee and now I’m ready to fill you in on all the details. Leading up to the sale today, I attended a fragrance workshop together with Reem and Olivia, which was hosted by the brand’s perfume expert, Céline, and the brand’s very own in-house perfumer, Bertrand Duchaufour!

Having already heard that Bertrand has worked on such iconic perfumes including Christian Dior’s Fahrenheit Fresh, Givenchy’s Lucky Charms and Acqua di Parma’s Colonia Assoluta, I was super excited to meet the man himself and was surprised by how generous and down-to-earth he was throughout the day, easily chatting to everyone and sharing his experiences and incredible journeys across the globe. In fact, all of the scents created for L’Artisan Parfumeur are inspired by Bertrand’s travels and there really is no end to his talent… not only does he return with a clear idea of the visions and moments he wants to capture for the perfume, he also sketches beautiful pencil drawings from his trip and composes poems which feature on the fragrance packaging.

L'Artisan Parfumeur

One of my favourite perfumes from the brand is the Traversee du Bosphore, which was also re-created as a mini candle and was imagined during a trip to Istanbul where Bertrand decided to capture the mixed aromas of the market place, mixing the leathery notes of the tanneries with the sweet and powdery notes of rose-flavoured Turkish Delight.

I also tried the brand’s light and fresh eau de toilette, L’Eau de L’Artisan, a unisex scent born from the light and airy French countryside which is a perfect daytime fragrance for that wonderfully clean smell which isn’t at all overbearing.

One of the first items I snapped up in the sale this morning however, was the leafy candle Parfum de Feuilles which is beautiful! A gorgeous, delicate scent that diffuses a light fragrance in the room! I really wish it came in a larger size because I just want to leave it burning all evening.

Needless to say, I went slightly crazy in the sale this morning and snapped up plenty of beauty treats (and way too many candles!) but the prices were just amazing and L’Artisan Parfumeur is one of my favourite perfume houses so there really was no stopping me… I actually learnt recently that it’s also a sister brand of Penhaligon’s which can only mean good things!
